"When a massive star reaches the end of its life, it collapses and then explodes as a supernova, which can shine as brightly as an entire galaxy for a brief time. Right before the explosion, the collapsed star emits a brilliant (but almost invisible) flash of neutrinos. Neutrinos are ghostly particles that can fly through matter as if it were transparent. I will described how we can catch some of these neutrinos in vast underground detectors. The dying star will also send out a burst of gravitational waves -- ripples in space-time. These astrophysical messengers will give us an early warning of the impending supernova. They will also give us an unprecedented inside view of the collapse and explosion in real time, and potentially even allow us to witness the birth of a black hole."
Farewell dinner for CECI Postdoctoral Researcher Dr. Michela Lai, who is leaving UCR to begin a faculty position at Queen's University, and CECI undergraduate Sarah Howick, who is starting grad school at Illinois Institute of Technology. Both worked in Shawn Westerdale's lab, doing research in dark matter and neutrino detection. Michela helped design the Outer Veto of DarkSide-20k and led the DarkSide-20k multi-messenger astronomy working group, led data analysis for the DEAP-3600 dark matter detection experiment, and worked on R&D for future low-threshold detectors. Sarah built a small liquid argon time projection chamber for R&D purposes, characterized materials for the detector, and made technical drawings of the future DarkSide-LowMass experiment.
Opening statements by UCR Professor & Nobel Laureate Barry Barish.

Congratulations to CECI undergraduate researcher Aiden Wilkins for winning the Bieniek Award for excellence in undergraduate research in experimental cosmology! Aiden's research project developed new optical technology for the LIGO gravitational wave observatory with Prof. Jon Richardson, and he is now pursuing his PhD at Stanford University.
Congratulations to CECI undergraduate research Peter Carney, as well. Peter won the CNAS Academic Excellence Award (2023 and 2024), CNAS Rosemary S.J. Schraer Award (2024), and the Barry Goldwater Scholarship (2023) for his work. Peter is now pursuing his PhD at Caltech.
